Bowling Clinches No. 2 Seed, McClain Named Freshman of the Year

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Texas Southern bowling wrapped up the SWAC's second seed after a strong weekend on the lanes at the SWAC East Round-up.

Fresh off a solid performance at the SWAC West Round-up in Humble, Texas during early January, TSU entered the next round-up tied for second with a 9-5 mark.

The team started the event off rough on Friday with a close loss (856-845) to Prairie View A&M before rebounding to beat Alabama A&M 922-892. However, TSU fell to Southern (849-785), Jackson State (877-848) and Alabama State (863-833).

On Saturday, TSU reversed course with an undefeated mark as they defeated Grambling State (902-558), Florida A&M (845-773), Prairie View A&M (805-789), Alabama A&M (903-865) and Southern (942-790).

Due to Jackson State finishing undefeated on Friday and Saturday, the regular season title was out of reach but the important first round bye in the upcoming SWAC Championship in March remained a reality. On Sunday, TSU wrapped up second and the bye with another undefeated day as they knocked off Jackson State (838-795), Alabama State (995-913), Grambling State (877-604) and Florida A&M (895-813).

Individually, freshman Zaniya McClain continued to soar as she led the team with a 185.64 average. Xiani Carpenter finished second with an average of 177.46 followed by Raivyn Summers (177.08), Haley Fujiwara (175.8) and Dazani Holmes (176.13). McClain also was named the SWAC's Freshman of the Year based on her total average at both roundups.

TSU is back in action this weekend at the Southern Queens in Baton Rouge, La. From Friday-Sunday.
