Tigers Head To San Antonio For Contest At UTSA Saturday Afternoon

• Texas Southern steps out of SWAC play for a non-conference match-up at UTSA on Saturday inside the Alamodome.

• Saturday's contest will feature live audio on KTSU 90.9 FM and will be shown live on the Stadium channel.

• TSU enters Saturday's game off its first shutout since 2016 and its first shutout over Southern since 1971.

• TSU is 0-18 all-time when playing up a division as an FCS (formerly Division I-AA) member. TSU's first-ever FBS (formerly I-A) opponent was in 1992 when they played Nevada. TSU has played three current members of Conference USA in UTEP, Rice and North Texas.

• Saturday's game marks the last of two games against FBS opponents this year. TSU also faced UTSA's conference mate North Texas on Sept. 10.

• North Shore High School out of Houston will be well-represented as four members (Clarence McKinney, Jeffrey Ceasar, Derrick Matthews, Dr. David Phillips) of the TSU coaching staff coached or played there while one coach on UTSA's staff (Joe Price) also coached there. TSU has two players on the team from the school and one from UTSA.

• Texas Southern has two players from San Antonio on the roster in wide receiver Derek Morton and linebacker Alex Bouldin.

• Despite its proximity to the city of Houston, TSU has only played in San Antonio three times since 2000. TSU last played in the Alamodome in 2000 against Grambling State in a classic game and at Incarnate Word in 2019.

• The Tigers feature fourth-year head coach Clarence McKinney. A Houston native, McKinney attended high school across the street at Jack Yates High School and played collegiately at Montana State and the University of Mary. He also served as head coach at Yates before joining the staffs at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona.

• Clarence McKinney is the 17th head coach in the history of Texas Southern Football. McKinney has a task ahead as the program has only had 28 winning seasons in 76 years of existence and hasn't recorded a winning season since 2000.

• McKinney won as a student at Yates High School and helped the University of Mary post three winning seasons as a student-athlete in college which made school history. As head coach at Yates, McKinney posted a mark of 30-8 over three years before moving on to the collegiate ranks as an assistant. As an assistant at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona, McKinney has only experienced three losing seasons in his 11 years of collegiate coaching.
