HOUSTON– Texas Southern posted a big five-run inning that helped them withstand a ninth inning rally by Southern on Friday to win 8-6 at MacGregor Park.
Texas Southern was down 3-2 as the Tigers headed to the plate in the fifth inning. Kamren Dukes led off the inning with a solo home run. Javier Valdez doubled in two runs while Oloruntimile tripled in a run. Scroggins singled in the Tigers fifth runs of the frame.
Southern posted three runs in the top of the ninth. Jose De La Torre picked up a RBI-double, while Ashanti Wheatley struck out but reached on an error to score De La Torre. Anthony Valdes then singled in Dondrayas Harris.
SU's Troy Lewis led the Jaguars offense with two hits, including a solo home run in the first and a double, and two RBI. Wheatley also collected two RBI in the game.
Texas Southern's Larry Romero (8-3) scattered six runs (three earned) on nine hits, struck out eight, walked two and hit three over 9.0 innings pitched for the win.Â
