Lady Tigers start SWAC slate with impressive win over Southern

HOUSTON- The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern opened up conference play with an impressive 59-45 victory over the visiting Jaguars of Southern University Saturday night at the HPE Arena.
 
The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by senior Toni Cheadle, who tallied 15 points, while shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the field. 

She was aided by fellow Senior Keina Vines who scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.   Freshman point guard Joyce Kennerson also had a solid night, scoring 8 points and led all players with 7 rebounds.

Texas Southern led from start to finish as a 17-3 Lady Tiger run was capped off by Jazzmin Parker's 3-pointer, which pushed the lead to 21-7 with 9:02 to play in the first half, giving the Lady Tigers the early momentum. 

TSU took a commanding 39-20 lead into the half and never looked back as they cruised to the victory.  Texas Southern shot 21-42 from the field, 6-of-15 from beyond the arc, and 11 of 18 from the free throw line. 

Texas Southern won the battle of the boards as well, out rebounding Southern 59 to 45.  Southern was led in scoring by Britney Washington with 14 points.

The Lady Tigers continue conference play Monday afternoon as they host Alcorn State at the HPE Arena.
