Lady Tigers rout Mississippi Valley State 70-46

HOUSTON- The Texas Southern Lady Tigers continued their winning ways as they won their 11th game in a row, easily beating Mississippi Valley State 70-46 Monday night at the HPE Arena. 

Texas Southern point guard Diamonisha Sophus led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 20 points.  She was aided by Alexus Johnson, and Miracle Davis.  Johnson had 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists on the night and Davis also turned in a solid performance with a team high 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

A'Shanti Weathers was able to keep MVSU close in the early going with 12 first half points.  Weathers would finish with a game high 21.  The game was 21-20, advantage Texas Southern when two free throws by TSU's Toni Cheadle sparked a 12-3 Lady Tigers run that was capped off by a Diamonisha Sophus 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 33-23 with 4:44 to play in the first half.  Texas Southern led 37-29 at the break.

In the second half TSU led by as many as 30 as the Lady Tigers wore down shorthanded Mississippi Valley State, who only dressed seven players. The win improves the Lady Tigers conference record to a league best 13-1 and keeps them in first place in the SWAC.

TSU's bench outscored MVSU's bench 12-2 and the Lady Tigers held a definitive advantage on the boards as well, outrebounding MVSU 49-31. 

TSU looks to push their current winning streak to 12 as they take to the road to face Alabama State Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.
