Josh White

Joshua Samuel Terry White, son of Clarence White III and Colette White Pate, begins his third year on the Texas Southern men's basketball staff and was recently promoted to assistant coach prior to the 2021-22 season.

A native of New Orleans, La., White's love for basketball began at the age of 4. He started playing Biddy basketball for Coach Firmin in New Orleans while being coached by one of his older brothers Clarence White. White also played for Senior Advisor to current United States President Joe Biden, Cedric Richmond, for two years and won a National Biddy championship.

At ages 9 and 10, White participated at a five-star camp in Pittsfield, Mass. along with and five-star camp in Slidell, La. and won the MVP for both.

Following his brother, Quannas White (a St. Augustine High School standout point guard), he played basketball at Martin Luther King elementary school and won multiple MVP's for his district under Coach Mack. He also played AAU basketball under Coach Rob and was MVP for the City of New Orleans. He began his middle school years at Christian Life Academy in Baton Rouge, La. where he played on the junior varsity team and scored 56 points in one game under Coach Todd Foster.

Joshua was named a three-time Louisiana All-State selection at point guard as he led Christian Life Academy to back-to-back Class lA state titles. He earned the state's Most Outstanding Player award by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association as a senior. He averaged 25.3 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game in his final year. In the playoffs, White helped Christian Life cruise to a 33.6 point margin of victory in the team's six playoff wins, including a pair of 50-plus point wins and earned District 7-1A MVP honors in each of the last three years.

He was selected by the Baton Rouge Advocate as the All-Metro Most Outstanding Player in 2006 and 2007, the MVP of the state's Top 28 Tournament in each of the last two seasons and the overall state MVP in 2007. He averaged over 24 points per game over his four-year varsity career and had Christian Life ranked as the fourth-best team in the state regardless of classification according to MaxPreps.com. Joshua was twice named to the Baton Rouge Advocate's Star of Stars squad, has been part of two national and eight state championships in club and high school competition, and Nominee for Louisiana's Mr. Basketball and for the McDonald's All-America team.

After high school, White received a scholarship to continue his basketball career at the University of North Texas under Johnny Jones. White had a hall of fame career at UNT from 2007-11 as he was named Freshman of the Year after leading his team in scoring (14 ppg). He was named to the Sun Belt All-Conference Team in 2007 and 2009. In 2010, White was also part of the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Championship team which advanced to the NCAA Basketball Tournament. 

White finished his collegiate career at UNT as the fourth-leading scorer in men's basketball history with 1,668 career points. White was also the first player in UNT history to amass 1,600 points and 300 assists, and he notched three of the top-10 free throw seasons in program history. He connected on 185 career three-pointers, which ranks fourth in school history, and his 37.2 percent clip from deep ranks 10th. White's 485 made free throws rank fifth in school history, and his 499 field goals rank ninth. White concluded his UNT career as the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in 2007-08, a two-time all-conference honoree, and was twice named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament team.

In 2017, White cemented himself in UNT history as he was inducted into the North Texas Hall of Fame at Apogee Stadium.

Following college, Joshua served as a personal basketball trainer while also serving as a coach with the Louisiana Dynasty AAU program alongside his brother, Quannas White, who is currently an assistant coach at the University of Houston.

In 2016-17, Joshua moved to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at Baton Rouge Community College. In 2018, White joined the University of Houston men's basketball staff in an internal operations role before assuming the role of Director of Player Development at TSU under his former college coach, Johnny Jones.

At TSU, White played a big role in the development of several players as two student- athletes (Tyrik Armstrong/Eden Ewing) had the opportunity to pursue professional careers overseas in addition to coaching All-SWAC performers in Armstrong, Yahuza Rasas and 2020-21 SWAC Newcomer of the Year Michael Weathers. In 2021, White also had a major hand in Texas Southern earning its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance and SWAC Tournament Championship while also helping TSU earn its second NCAA Tournament win in school history.
