Ely Gallego enters his first season as Interim Head Coach and his second season overall on the Texas Southern University baseball staff after serving as an assistant coach during the 2025 season. Gallego brings nine seasons of collegiate coaching experience, including eight years at Sul Ross State University where he progressed from student assistant to graduate assistant, to assistant coach, and eventually head coach.
A graduate of Alpine High School and an alum of Sul Ross State University, Gallego was a standout two-way player throughout his collegiate career. In 2016, he delivered one of the strongest seasons in program history, hitting .352 with 56 hits, 16 doubles, seven home runs, and 49 RBI, while also posting a 6–5 record with five complete games and 60 strikeouts over 80.1 innings. His performance earned Third-Team All-ASC honors and ASC Pitcher of the Week recognition following an 11-strikeout, three-hit shutout against Schreiner.Â
Gallego continued his playing career professionally across four seasons in the independent leagues with the Alpine Cowboys and Sonoma Stompers, where he compiled a career .344 batting average, 13 home runs, 97 RBI, and a 20–6 pitching record, highlighted by a 2019 Pecos League Championship.
In addition to his collegiate and professional playing résumé, Gallego has extensive instructional experience in hitting, fielding, and pitching, and is known for his development-first coaching philosophy. He is passionate about mentoring the next generation of baseball athletes and fostering growth on and off the field.
With one year already invested in the TSU program, Gallego steps into the interim head coaching role with continuity, leadership, and a commitment to elevating Texas Southern Baseball’s culture and competitive edge.
