EL PASO, Texas — Texas Southern earned its first win of the season in dominant fashion Thursday afternoon, sweeping Oral Roberts 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) at Memorial Gym.
The Lady Tigers showcased a balanced attack and strong defensive presence, recording a season-best .195 hitting percentage and out-blocking the Golden Eagles 10-5. Texas Southern controlled the tempo early, hitting .321 in the opening set and never trailing after taking a 4-0 lead.
Ava Houston led the way with 10 kills on a .353 clip, while freshman Morgynne McQueen added six kills and hit. Gracie Hill chipped in five kills off the bench in the third set to help seal the victory.
Texas Southern's defense was anchored by libero Morelia Lorenzo Diaz, who tallied 18 digs and posted a perfect reception percentage. Kourtni Collier contributed 11.5 points and was instrumental at the net with four block assists.
Setter Ava Ray distributed the offense efficiently, finishing with 45 assists and two service aces. The Lady Tigers held Oral Roberts to a .118 hitting percentage and forced 23 attack errors.
Texas Southern returns to action Friday against UTEP at 2:30 PM as part of the Borderland Invitational.
