Softball Sweeps Southern Saturday Afternoon

Texas Southern closed out its home series against Southern with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Memorial Park.

TSU 5, SOUTHERN 4
TSU used a three-run fifth to overcome a deficit en route to a 5-4 lead.

Southern jumped ahead 3-0 in the third and held the lead until the fourth. Lanay Carr opened with a leadoff double and scored after a SU fielding error on Madison Battle's at-bat. Battle also crossed home during the play for a 3-2 margin. The Jaguars responded in the fifth with a run and had a chance to add more but starter Kaelani Randle forced a fly out to end the inning.

TSU would overcome its deficit in the fifth as Kylie Wilson led the inning off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt from Marisa Perla. Karisma Garcia tied it with a two-run homer to right field and Carr followed with a double. Battle's RBI double scored Carr for a 5-4 lead. From that point, Randle retired the next six batters in order for the win.

Wilson finished 3-for-4 with one run while Carr was 2-for-3 with two runs. Randle came on in relief and pitched four innings of two-hit ball for the win.

TSU 8, SOUTHERN 0
Kylie Wilson pitched a one-hit shutout and Lanay Carr drove in three RBI as TSU run-ruled Southern 8-0 in game two.

The score was tied at 0-0 entering the fifth but DaNia Durr opened the frame with a leadoff double. Wilson moved pinch runner Amerie Martin to third and an SU error at shortshop led to a 1-0 lead as London scored. Destiny Menchaca's two-RBI single upped the lead to 3-0 followed by Carr's three-run homer which fell out of the right fielder's glove at the wall for a 6-0 margin.

Wilson hit a well-placed one-out bunt single in the sixth followed by Marisa Perla's single. TSU executed a double steal as Garcia drove in both runners after a single to right.

Wilson finished 2-for-3 with two runs while Carr was 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI. Wilson allowed only one hit in six innings of action.

TSU is back in action at Houston Christian on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
