TSU's seven-game winning stream was halted in the final minutes at Arkansas-Pine Bluff by a 69-68 margin on Tuesday.
Playing a makeup date due to a weather-related postponement in January, UAPB took advantage of its rare schedule change as they jumped out to a 20-12 lead early on before TSU finally responded with a 9-0 run to lead 21-20 with seven minutes left in the first half. UAPB would answer with a trey on its next possession and held on to the lead en route to a 33-27 halftime lead.Â
The deficit grew to nine (36-27) early on but TSU responded with a 15-3 run as Jaylin Jackson-Posey scored five points to lead the charge as TSU led 42-39. TSU maintained its lead and led by as much as six (63-57) with 7:15 left but would ony score one point over the next 2:31 as UAPB went on an 8-1 run to regain a 65-64 lead with 4:02 left. With 2:22 left, TSU regained a 66-65 lead but UAPB counteted with a basket to move ahead 67-66. TSU missed it snext attempt and UAPB's Doctor Bradley hit another basket to lead 69-66 with 1:11 left but Zaire Hayes' step back jumper drew TSU to within 69-68 with 53 seconds left. TSU picked up a big steal late but nearly turned it over until they forced a jump ball to regain possession, TSU had a shot to win it twice but but missed both attempts as time expired.
The Tigers (10-12, 7-2) were led in scoring by Kavion McClain, who finished with 19 points. Kenny Hunter added 15 points, 15 rebounds and two steals for Texas Southern. Zaire Hayes also had 11 points and six rebounds.Â
