LAFAYETTE, La. -A promising start gave way to an unfortunate end as TSU baseball fell 14-11 at Louisiana on Tuesday evening.
Forced to play earlier in the day due to expected inclement weather in the area, TSU wasted no time in setting the tone as John Moya singled, stole second and scored on a one-out RBI single from Jaden Jones. Jesse Herrera III drew a walk and Even Joubert homered in his home state for a 4-0 lead.
UL scored once in the first but TSU continued to score as Bryce Hughes drew a leadoff walk followed by Jones' single to open the second. Another Herrera III walk loaded the bases followed by a bases loaded walk from Miguel Morales for a 5-1 lead. Daylon Carleton and Jaden Flores both recorded RBIs to up the margin to 8-1.
The Ragin Cajuns added three more in the bottom half to trail 8-4 but TSU didn't let it faze them as Hughes scored on a fielding error followed by a Carleton two-RBI double for a 10-4 margin. Flores led the fourth off with a double and scored on a Hughes' double for an 11-4 TSU lead. UL had a homer in the fourth to trail 11-5 but the scoring would cease for two innings.
UL loaded the bases with no outs to open the seventh and eventually tied it up with six straight runs. With two outs in the inning, a TSU wild pitch scored the go-ahead run for UL.
UL scored twice in the eighth to lead 14-11 but TSU kept battling as Flores led the ninth off with a single. However, that would be the last hit of the game as UL recorded a fielder's choice, pop out and groundout to end the game.
Flores finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run while Jones and Carleton had multiple hits. Joubert led the way with three RBI followed by two each from Flores and Carleton. Isaac Garcia was tagged with the loss on the mound.
TSU is back in action on Friday for a three-game series at Incarnate Word beginning at 2:05 p.m.
