TSU Baseball dropped its 2025 season opener Friday night by an 8-3 margin to Southern University at Daikin Park.
TSU struck first in the opening frame with one out as Bryce Hughes was hit by a pitch, followed by a Jesse Herrera III walk and Jaden Jones' single to load the bases. Damian Garcia was hit by a pitch to score a run for TSU. Â Jonathan Trejo upped the margin to 2-0 with a sac fly. Southern doubled with one out in the bottom frame, stole third and cut the margin to 2-1 after a sac fly. They tied it at 2-all on an RBI double.
Â
TSU newcomer Daylon Carleton hit a two-out homer over the left field fence for a 3-2 lead in the second but SU would answer in the bottom half after a leadoff homer and run scored off a wild pitch to lead 4-3. TSU starting pitcher Kewan Braziel ran into a tight situation with two runners on with one out which led to a pitching change. Reliever Joshua Prieto came on in relief and allowed a single which loaded the bases but he worked his way out of the jam with two straight outs to trail 5-3.
Â
SU tackled on a run in the fourth to lead 6-3 and two more in the sixth for an 8-3 margin. TSU would load the bases in the bottom of the eighth with one out but the rally fell short as SU recorded a pop out and groundout to end the threat.
Â
Carleton, Jones and Herrera III all finished 2-for-4 as Carleton. Garcia and Trejo each an RBI. Braziel was tagged with the loss in his TSU debut.
Â
TSU will face Prairie View A&M on Saturday at 7 p.m. back at Daikin Park.
