Baseball Opens SWAC Play With Offensive Explosion

LORMAN, Miss. - Texas Southern combined for 44 runs in a doubleheader SWAC West win over Alcorn State on Saturday.
 
TSU 32, ASU 1
TSU recorded 23 hits and had a pair of double-digit innings as they defeated ASU 32-1 in the opener.
 
The Tigers broke open a scoreless game with a 12-run second inning as Michael Goudeau opened the scoring with a two-RBI single. Both Johnathon Thomas and Justin Cooper drew bases loaded walks for a 4-0 lead and Jeremy Gaines ripped a single to left to lead 6-0. Gabe Vasquez hit a 2-RBI double for an 8-0 margin followed by Jeremy Almaguer's RBI single. Goudeau's base loaded walk scored the 10^th run while Tyrese Clayborne nearly cleaned the bases with a 3-RBI triple.
 
Gaines scored in the third via an ASU throwing error and TSU tacked on five more runs in the sixth before erupting for 14 runs in the seventh highlighted by Justin Blogg's three-run RBI.
 
Vasquez led the way with six RBI and was 4-for-5 at the plate. Justin Cooper, Juan Sanchez, Tyler Legendre, Blogg and Clayborne all had three RBI. Jordan Martinez struck out four and allowed one run in five innings of action.
 
TSU 12, ASU 1
Josiah Castro and Adolf Castillo combined to throw a one-hitter while TSU had another strong game at the plate as they won 12-1 on Saturday in the nightcap.
 
TSU jumped ahead 2-0 in the first on Jeremy Gaines' RBI and Jeremy Almaguer's RBI double. ASU picked up its lone hit and scored off a TSU error in the bottom frame but Johnathon Thomas hit a solo homer in the third for a 3-1 lead. TSU combined for eight runs in the fifth and sixth to put the game away.
 
Castro struck out six and allowed one hit in six innings of action. Almaguer led TSU with three RBI while Gaines and Gabe Vasquez both had three hits.
 
TSU closes out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
