Baseball Falls Twice In Friday Doubleheader

Texas Southern dropped a pair of contests in its return to the diamond on Friday at the University of Houston.
 
UTRGV 6, TSU 1
UTRGV had a trio of two-run innings as they handed the Tigers a 6-1 defeat in game one.
 
Errors haunted TSU in the first inning as two errors led to a bases loaded walk and another RBI single as they trailed 2-0. TSU would slice its deficit in half in the bottom frame as Johnathan Thomas led the inning off with a double before scoring on Jeremy Gaines' RBI.
 
A pair of hit batters led to UTRGV's next two runs as the batters were driven in by a double and single for a 4-1 lead. TSU would combine to leave three runners on in the fourth and fifth while UTRGV had another two-run frame in the fifth as they opened the inning with a double before scoring on an error. Another hit batter would lead to the final run of the game as he scored on a sac fly.
 
Thomas went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Jordan Martinez (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he went five innings before giving way to Adolf Castillo and Kobe Head.
 
HOUSTON 11, TSU 4
UH scored nine runs over the final four innings to break open a close game as TSU fell 11-4 in the nightcap.
 
TSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second as CJ Castillo doubled home Avery Chatman. UH moved ahead 2-1 in the bottom frame with a two out, two-RBI single before TSU tied it in the third on Justin Cooper's RBI double which drove in Johnathan Thomas, who reached on a triple.
 
UH moved ahead 3-2 in the fifth on a two-out sac fly before driving home its fourth run in the sixth which led to a pitching change. TSU avoided further damage as reliever Lane Gordon picked up a big strikeout with the bases loaded.
 
The Cougars scored three runs with two outs in the seventh for a 7-2 lead before tacking on four more in the eighth.
 
Thomas and Castillo led TSU with two hits while Cooper, Castillo and Clayborne each had an RBI.
 
Josiah Castro fell to 1-1 on the year as he lasted 5.1 innings.
 
TSU closes out tourney action on Saturday at noon against UTRGV.
