Tigers Get Aggressive In Contest At SFA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Texas Southern put forth an aggressive offensive effort Sunday afternoon in a non-conference loss at Stephen F. Austin.

After recording only 17 shots on the offensive end in its first five games, the Tigers recorded a season-best 14 shots with three corner kicks. They outshot SFA 7-5 in the first half while shooting seven shots in the second half.

"Although we went down in the first minute of today's match I'm still happy with what we put together in the final third of the field," said head coach Lindsay Vera. "The number of total shots reflects our progression into an attacking mentality."

SFA scored its first goal 58 seconds into the contest but TSU would respond with a pair of shots from Jada MacLean and another from Mia Marshall. Begona Rodriguez-Bravo recorded a shot attempt slightly past the 20th minute but SFA would up the margin to 2-0 following a goal at the 26:42 mark.

Marshall logged her second shot attempt of the game four minutes later but it was saved by SFA. Cassie Sandoval closed out the shot attempts for TSU in the first half.

TSU's Bailey Blalock recorded the team's first shot of the second half followed by multiple attempts from MacLean. SFA added its third goal in the 58th minute to lead 3-0 and spent the remainder of the half chasing MacLean as she finished with two more attempts from that point.

MacLean finished with six shots and three shots on goal while Marshall and Pavon added two shots. Goalies Salma Ghazal and Oriana Palacios combined for three saves as each played a half.

The Tigers will wind things down competition wise with only two matches over the next two weeks. They'll face Lamar in Beaumont, Texas on Friday, Sept. 13 and at Rice on Wednesday, Sept. 18. With only two matches during that span, the Tigers will take advantage of the time to heal from injuries but also work on fine-tuning both ends of the field.

"We've been down some players due to various injuries. The response of our healthy players, who are willing to fill any role, has been outstanding and certainly why I believe this group will continue to improve," said Vera. "We must do better in transition and better in the first and final minutes of each half.  This will be our focus for the week as we get ready for Lamar on Friday."
