Tigers comeback attempt falls short at HBU

HOUSTON- A 51- yard touchdown run by Terrance Peters with 4:08 left spoiled Texas Southern's comeback efforts as the Tigers fell 24-20 to the Huskies on Saturday night.

Prior to that score, Austin Watts had given TSU (0-2) a lead with two touchdowns less than two minutes apart.

Watts hauled in a 8-yard pitch from Averion Hurts to bring the Tigers within four points, and later returned a punt 93-yards to hand Texas Southern a 20-17 lead with 5:53 left.

Both sides fought to a 7-7 stalemate at the half, with Peters providing a 34-yard score and Texas Southern's Tylor Cook tying it with a 16-yard scamper of his own.

HBU pushed its lead to 17-7 thanks to a 10-point second quarter highlighted by a Garrett Dolan sack of Hurts that forced a fumble. Terrance Manderville scooped it up for a touchdown.

Hurts was 14-of-33 for 143 yards for TSU in his first start of the season. Tracy Johnson caught seven balls for 50 yards for the Tigers. Peters ended his night having gained 155 yards on the ground with 14 attempts.

Demetrius Johnson led the team in solo tackles with 8 on the night while racking up a total of 14 tackles (8 solo, 6 assisted).

Texas Southern will host their home opener on Saturday, September 17th versus Mississippi Valley State at BBVA Compass Stadium at 7:00 pm.
