Tigers late inning rally falls short

HOUSTON- Texas Southern put together a late inning rally, but fell 7-6 to Houston Baptist on Tuesday at MacGregor Field.

HBU held a 4-0 lead before the Tigers got on the board in the fourth inning when Richard Alamo scored Scroggins with a single to left field. TSU picked up a run in the sixth on Ryan Lazo hit a solo home run to open the inning.

HBU added single runs in the fifth and sixth to push their lead to 6-2 through six innings.

The Tigers posted three runs in the eighth inning. Christian Sanchez scored Oloruntimile, who reached on a passed ball, took second on a wild pitch, and stole third base, on a single to left center. Alamo crossed the plate on Hicks ground out before Gerreck Jimenez singled through the left side to score Jose Cabreja.

HBU picked up a RBI double from Joe Van Marter to collect an insurance run in the ninth inning. Andrew Alvarez and Christian Thames both picked up two RBI for the Huskies.

TSU added a run in the bottom of the ninth on Alamo's sacrifice fly. Alamo led the Tigers with two RBI on one hit and a walk. Lazo, Hicks and Jimenez all collected a RBI in the loss.

HBU's Ivan Smith (1-0) scattered two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked four and struck out two in 5.1 innings pitched for the win. Julian Griego (1) tallied the save after allowing one run on three hits, walked one and struck out one over 1.2 innings of action.

Gabriel Gomez (0-2) gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked five and struck out one over 3.1 innings in the loss.
