Softball Competes at Hilton Houston Plaza Classic

Game One

HOUSTON – A three-run fifth inning was the difference as Texas Southern overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat Incarnate Word 4-3 during the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic.

Brianna Simpson knotted things up in the decisive inning with a two-run homer over the center field wall. Kierra Patton later followed with a RBI single to hand over the lead to the Lady Tigers.

UIW threatened in the second, eventually loading the bases but TSU escaped after a force-out at home and a groundout.
Simpson was 2-for-3 with three RBI two runs scored. Tyra Williams improved to 3-0 for Texas Southern, allowing three hits in 2.1 innings of relief for starter Jasmine Fulmore (4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER allowed) in the game.
 
Game Two

HOUSTON – A fast start by Houston derailed Texas Southern in a 9-6 loss to the Cougars during the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic.

Texas Southern allowed Houston to build a 7-2 advantage at the end of three innings, which was highlighted by a three-run home run by UH's Elise LeBeouf in the second stanza.
TSU was able to get within one run thanks to a three-run fifth inning that saw Kierra Patton – who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored – deliver a two-run homer in the inning.

Houston would add a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, and Texas Southern was held quiet the rest of the way.

Lauren Rodriguez (1-4) took the loss, as she left the game after 1.1 innings. Tyra Williams pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing nine hits and four runs.
