Texas Southern tops Prairie View 1-0 for first-ever win in postseason

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Texas Southern University's historic soccer season was extended another day after the Lady Tigers claimed a 1-0 win Thursday over Prairie View A&M in the quarterfinal round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.

Alisa Holloway's perfect strike from the edge of the penalty area into the top of the net gave the Lady Tigers the advantage less than 90 seconds prior to the final whistle. Madison Phillips was credited with the assist.

The Lady Tigers (11-6-1) added another first to a season that already saw the team post its first winning record and first 10-win season; the win over Prairie View A&M was the first postseason win in the program's history.

"I thought we had a really good second-half effort that was capped by a really quality goal that needed everybody in order to happen," head coach Kathryn Saunders said. "PV always does a good job and were really resilient tonight. That just meant we had to think of different ways to go about things."

TSU will face No. 3-seed Alabama State in the semifinal round Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The No. 7-seed Lady Panthers ended their season with a 3-11-1 record.

The visitors enjoyed a 25-5 advantage in total shots, and controlled the pace of the match throughout; however, a strong defensive effort by Prairie View A&M kept the match competitive, and kept the Lady Tigers off the scoreboard until the very end.

Holloway's goal was the second of the season, and the first match-winning goal of the sophomore's collegiate career.

"She had some good goals last year, and I knew it was only a matter of time before she finally got hers, so I'm really excited for her."

TSU goalkeeper Alexis Robles made three saves en route to her sixth shutout of the season. Prairie View A&M's Clarissa Ledesma made 16 saves on the other end of the field.

The win was the Lady Tigers' fourth consecutive triumph, and second victory in as many matches over Prairie View A&M, who was the opponent in TSU's regular-season finale last week. The Lady Tigers have won seven of their last eight matches.
