TSU shuts out Alcorn State 3-0 to stay undefeated in SWAC play

LORMAN, Miss. – The Texas Southern Lady Tigers concluded their weekend trip to Magnolia State on Sunday with a 3-0 win at Alcorn State.

Kayla Smith, Kailand Thompson, and Paige Hayward all scored goals for the visiting Lady Tigers (7-5-1), who remained undefeated through six matches in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

The Lady Tigers remain tied with Howard atop the SWAC table, with five wins and a draw. TSU hosts Howard in the Lady Tigers' next match Sunday, Oct. 16.

TSU's 5-0-1 start to conference play is its best in the history of the program, which began varsity competition in 2002. The Lady Tigers were also unbeaten through their first six conference matches in 2014, winning four times and drawing twice.

Goalkeeper Alexis Robles needed to make only two saves to pick up her third shutout win of the season; she improved her record to 6-5-1 overall.

TSU players were determined to return to Texas with a victory, and gave themselves every opportunity to leave the state of Mississippi undefeated in SWAC play. The Lady Tigers fired 23 shots, 13 of which were on target.

The Lady Braves (1-6, 1-4 SWAC) kept their visitors off the scoresheet for the first half-hour of the match before Smith netted what turned out to be the match-winner in the 37th minute. Smith was in the right spot in front of the goal when she took a crossing pass from Ysamar Alonso in the 37th minute to convert her fourth goal of the season.

Less than two full minutes later, Thompson stretched TSU's lead to 2-0 when she fired a second-chance shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal after first being denied by Alcorn goalkeeper Giselle Rojas seconds earlier.

Hayward gave the Lady Tigers an insurance goal in the 79th minute with a shot from outside the penalty area that sailed over Rojas' outstretched arms into the high corner of the goal. It was Hayward's eighth goal of the season.

The Lady Tigers will have a full week to prepare themselves for the SWAC's other unbeaten team when they host Howard on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Alexander Durley Stadium. The Bison begin their trip to Texas with a Friday match at Prairie View A&M, while the Lady Tigers have the SWAC's bye that day.

TSU needs just one win in its remaining four matches to match the program's top mark of eight victories in a single season. The Lady Tigers will play all four of their remaining matches at home.
