Box Score Final StatsBEAUMONT - Texas Southern continued their impressive streak of beating Southland Conference schools on Wednesday as they defeated Lamar 6-2 in non-conference play.
TSU jumped out to an early lead and added to it in a three-run seventh inning which put the game weill out of reach for the Cardinals.
TSU (23-15) capitalized on a walk in the first inning with three-straight singles. Ryan Lazo reached on the walk, and stole second base just before Javier Valdez pushed him across on single. Valdez later scored in the inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the middle of the first.
Texas Southern pushed it back out to a 3-1 lead in the second inning, again as the Tigers capitalized on a walk- to Zach Welz during the inning. Welz went from first to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He scored on an infield single off of Lazo's bat.
Pinch hitter Kamren Dukes delivered the big hit for Texas Southern in the seventh inning on a three-run triple down the right field line. He pushed across Welz, Robert Garza and Valdez to give the Tigers all the cushion they would need for a big road win.Â
"I'm happy I got an opportunity to come up in a big situation, said Dukes. "I've been needing a confidence booster and today helped. It means a lot the coaches believed in me to come up and get a job done."
Ryan Rios (5-1) earned the win in 5.1 innings of work as the Tigers saw a total of four pitchers take the mound during the contest.Â
