Tigers move closer to clinching top seed with wins over Grambling State


GRAMBLING, La.- The Texas Southern Tigers won their three-game series over Grambling State  as they moved closer to securing a top seed in the upcoming 2015 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

TSU won game one 9-2, game two 11-4, before falling in the series finale in a nail biter 8-7. The Texas Southern Tigers improved to 12-6 in league play with their wins over Grambling State.

Ryan Lazo and Javier Valdez each tallied two RBIs in game one of the series to lead TSU's offensive production. On the mound Felix Gomex got the game one victory as he pitched seven innings allowing two earned runs and five hits.

In game two of the series Christopher Scroggins had the hot bat on the team driving in four runs at the plate. Frank Cruz got the win with seven innings of works allowing four earned runs on five hits.

Game three of the series was a back and forth affair with both teams subsequently battling down to a one run game.

After jumping out to a 7-4 advantage in the top of the sixth inning the Grambling State Tigers rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning with three runs to take a 8-7 lead.

GSU held on to the slim advantage in the final innings of the contest as they avoided another series sweep at the hands of the Tigers. Robert Garza led the team with two RBIs in game two while Seth Oliver was saddled with the loss on the mound.

Texas Southern has two regular season conference series remaining versus Prairie View A&M and Southern.

The Tigers will have the ability to move closer towards securing the top seed in the SWAC Tournament with a pivotal three-game series versus the Jaguars later this month (April 25-26) at MacGregor Park.
