NAGODOCHES, Texas. – Texas Southern dropped a 66-62 decision to Stephen F. Austin Saturday afternoon.
A frantic close to the game saw Texas Southern knot things up at 61 thanks to a Derrick Griffin dunk with 32 seconds left in the contest.
However, Jared Johnson's go-ahead three with 24 seconds on the clock was the difference, and free throws wrapped the game up.
The Tigers opened the game on a 7-0 run en route to a 31-24 lead at intermission. In the second half, Texas Southern extended its lead to 10 (40-30) with 16:49 remaining in the contest. The Jacks then found their shot from beyond the arc, as several treys brought them back in the game.
A lay-up from Thomas Walkup gave Stephen F. Austin a 52-51 lead with just over five minutes left, setting the stage for the final moments.
Griffin had his second double-double in as many games with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Malcolm Riley led the Tigers with 21 points.
Johnson led the Jacks with 18 points, with six three-pointers made in the game. Walkup put up 14 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals.
