BATON ROUGE, La. – Texas Southern picked up a 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-23) victory over Alcorn State at the Horace H. Moody Intramural Center in the opening round of the 2015 SWAC Women's Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Tigers started fast with a quick opening set victory. The second set was back and forth early on, until Texas Southern (14-17) broke through when it scored eight of the next 10 points to snap an 8-8 tie.
Alcorn State put together a short burst of offense to lessen the gap to within three points, but Texas Southern was able to stave off a potential comeback during the course of the frame, thanks to another 8-2 offensive run to close out the set after the Braves (12-21) cut TSU's to 17-14.
In the third set, Texas Southern and Alcorn State traded points for much of the initial going. The East No. 4 seed Braves took control when they jumped out to a 14-9 lead, but the advantage didn't last long as the West's top seed responded with a 7-2 burst to knot the frame up at 16. After more point-for-point play left the teams deadlocked at 21, Texas Southern put the match away with a 4-2 close to the contest.
Texas Southern's Kali Fluke picked up 10 kills and four blocks, hitting at a .625 attack percentage. Chelsea Thompson put in 14 assists, and Asia Howard dished out 11 assists and added seven digs.
