JACKSON, Miss.- The Texas Southern Lady Tigers volleyball team opened 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament play with a 3-0 sweep against Mississippi Valley State.
The Lady Tigers raced off to a 10-2 advantage taking early control of the contest in the first set. The Lady Tigers closed out the first set winning 25-12 behind strong performances from their outside hitters.
Texas Southern won the second set of the match 25-17. In the third set of the match the Lady Tigers had to claw their way back into the contest after falling behind 12-17. Texas Southern went on to defeat Mississippi Valley State 26-24.
In the back and forth third set the Lady Tigers showcased their resiliency battling back during the final stretch run of the contest. 2013 SWAC Freshman of the Year Kali Fluke paced the Lady Tigers offensive attack racking up 16 kills and three block assists.
Veronica Azubuike tallied 13 kills and nine digs as she put in an impressive performance on both sides of the ball. Texas Southern will now get set to face Alabama A&M in the second round of the tournament.

JACKSON, Miss. - Alabama A&M University held off Texas Southern to claim a 3-2 win to advance to the semi-final round of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament on Saturday inside the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center.
Texas Southern (14-11, 7-1) fell with match set scores of 23-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 10-15. The Lady Bulldogs led 10-7 before closing the match on a 5-3 run fueled by a pair of kills.
TSU (14-11) was guided by Sarah Wooten's 26 assists with Jyra Churchill pitching in 20. Robyn Shannon led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills. Kali Fluke added 14 with Veronica Azubuike finishing with 13.
Erin Spivey led the backline with 11 digs.

JACKSON, Miss. - Texas Southern University advanced another round at the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament with 3-0 sweep over Prairie View A&M on Saturday at Lee E. Williams Athletic & Assembly Center.
Jyra Churchill and Sarah Wooten guided TSU (15-11) combining for 27 assists. Churchill racked up 14 while Wooten gathered 13. Audriana Carson collected nine kills and six digs.
The Lady Tigers collected 10 blocks gathering set scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-21. Texas Southern will face Alabama A&M tomorrow at 9:00 am in the semi-final round of the tournament.
