Women’s Golf in 2nd Place Following Opening Round of SWAC Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Texas Southern University Women's Golf Team is in 2nd place after posting a 323 in the opening round of the 2026 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Golf Championship.

Junior Thaiz Amezcua leads the way for the Tigers with her 7-over-par 79 and is tied in 2nd place individually. Freshman Carmen Pate is 1 stroke back on 80 and is tied in 4th place. Senior Azul Amezcua is tied in 11th place on 81, while junior Shawnise Gregory carded an 83.

The current standings have Prairie View A& leading the tournament on 317, Texas Southern University in 2nd place on 323, Alabama State University are in 3rd place on 332, Jackson State University sits in 4th place on 336, Southern University in 5th place on 341, and Bethune-Cookman in 6th place on 343.

Following the practice round on Sunday, the SWAC recognized the post-season award winners for the 2025-2026 season which included two women from Texas Southern University. Freshman Carmen Pate received All-SWAC First Team Honors and junior Shawnise Gregory received All-SWAC Second Team.

The competing teams are playing at the Robert Trent Jones Trail: Oxmoor Valley, a par-72 championship course. The Tigers tee up for the second round of the SWAC Championships Tuesday morning with a 7:30 am start.
