Box Score 1 COVINGTON, Ga. - Texas Southern Softball won three of hits first four games fueled by an explosive offense at the HBCU Collegiate Softball Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
TSU 9, N.C. CENTRAL 1
Reigning SWAC Player of the Week and Newcomer Jade McQueen belted a three-run homer for an early 3-0 lead as Lanay Carr and Karisma Garcia also scored. TSU returned to the board in the second as DaNia Durr led the inning off with a homer followed by KateLynn Cooper's sac RBI which scored Jordyn Talbert.
Carr led the third off by reaching base on an error and Karisma Garcia hit a two-run shot for a 7-0 margin. NCCU would score on an error in the bottom frame but TSU scored twice in the fifth as Durr drove in a run along with scoring on a wild pitch.
Zaria Turner struck out three and allowed only three hits for the win. McQueen led the way with three RBI followed by two from Durr and Garcia. Durr also led TSU with two hits.
TSU 11, SC STATE 4
TSU claimed the nightcap with a dominant 11-4 win over SC State.
HOWARD 7, TSU 4
TSU fell in the opener on Saturday by a 7-4 margin.
TSU 14, HAMPTON 10
The nightcap saw a slugfest as the teams combined for 24 runs on 23 hits as Texas Southern held off a late Hampton rally.
Down 4-0 entering the third, Tau cut the lead to 4-3 after a three-run third but HU scored twice in the bottom half to lead 6-3. Texas Southern put up six in the bottom of the fourth before Hampton found another long ball making the score 9-7.
Hampton entered the seventh chasing seven runs as they were down 14-7 following a five-spot from Texas Southern in the bottom of the fifth. Despite several runs late, TSU held the Pirates off for the win.
TSU will close out tourney play versus North Carolina A&T State on Sunday at 9 a.m.
