STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Both games in Tuesday's midweek softball doubleheader were decided in the late innings as Tarleton State won 5-3 and 10-2 on Tuesday.
TARLETON STATE 5, TSU 3
A walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh was the difference as TSU fell 5-3 in the opener.
TSU jumped ahead 1-0 in the second as Tierrah Williams singled and scored Tevanae Tate's RBI double. Tarleton moved ahead with two runs in the bottom of the second and TSU had an opportunity to tie in the third with the bases loaded but had the runner thrown out.
The Texans moved ahead 3-1 with a run in the fifth but TSU wouldn't go down quietly in the final inning. Haley Castro led the inning off with a single but was thrown out followed by a groundout.
Ashling Shahan drew a two-out walk and Mila Rodriguez doubled her home to trail 3-2. Aubri Ford battled with a full count and came up big as her RBI single to center scored pinch runner Crimson Davis to tie the game at 3-all.
The momentum was short-lived though as Tarleton State drew a walk to open the bottom frame followed by a walk-off homer.
Williams led TSU with a 2-for-4 outing which included a run scored. Haley Castro also finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Naomi Reyes struck out five as she went the distance.
TARLETON STATE 10, TSU 2
A seven-run sixth broke open a tight game as Tarleton State won the series 10-2.
TSU scored first in the second as Tierrah Williams drove in Mila Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead. The lead increased to 2-0 in the fourth as Williams drove in another RBI which scored Haley Castro.
The Texans walked, singled and tied it at 2-all on an RBI triple in the fourth. An error in the bottom of the fifth led to another Tarleton State run before they broke open the game with seven runs in the sixth which triggered the run-rule.
Williams went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Mila Rodriguez and Haley Castro both scored runs. Jazmine Gendorf struck out two in 5.1 innings followed by Nora Rodriguez on the mound.
TSU is back in action for the start of SWAC play on Friday, March 11 at Alcorn State.
