HOUSTON – Despite a late-inning rally from Texas Southern, Southern took down the Lady Tigers 7-6 during Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park.

Sydney Andrews got things started for the Jaguars (14-19, 6-8 SWAC) with a bunt single. Kiara Suttles moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt, and after Andrews stole third, she scored on a passed ball. After TSU (19-11-1, 10-2 SWAC) went scoreless in their half of the first, Southern added two more runs as Jazmine Dukes scored on a throwing error, and Andrews picked up an RBI single.

Though Lauren Rodriguez came on in relief in the fourth, the Jaguars opened up a sizable advantage in the fifth as Rodriguez issued free passes to Suttles and Elizabeth Donaldson. After Suttles scored on a throwing error from behind the plate – during which Jamani Greer reached base – Southern starting pitcher Aubrion James singled home Donaldson and moved Greer to third.

Greer scored on a passed ball and Tiara Scott delivered another RBI single to make it 6-0 Jaguars. Texas Southern got on the board in the sixth with a RBI single from Ebony Wiltz. In the seventh, Coren Davis rapped a two-run single to spark a comeback attempt for TSU. Tevanae Tate followed with a RBI double, and Garcia singled home Tate. Wiltz (3-for-3) drove another in to bring Texas Southern within one, but Suttles picked off Wiltz during a steal attempt to end the game.

Fulmore (3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R) fell to 5-4 on the year, while James (6.2 IP, 12 H, 6 ER) got the win. Tate and Garcia each had a pair of hits. Shauna Knighten led Southern with three hits.

The Lady Tigers return to action Wednesday when they visit Austin for a game against the Texas Longhorns.
