HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a doubleheader loss at nearby Houston on Sunday.
Â
At Cougar Field, Houston swept the doubleheader by scores of 1-0 and 6-0.
Â
Playing for the first time in more than a week due to recent inclement weather, the Lady Tigers' defense and Lauren Rodriguez matched the Cougars pitch-for-pitch until the fifth inning of the opening game. The Cougars scored their lone run when Rodriguez hit UH's Kaylin Crumpton with a pitch with the bases loaded.
Â
Rodriguez took the tough-luck loss despite a solid outing. She struck out two three Cougars, allowed just three hits, and only allowed three Houston runners to reach third base.
Â
Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers' bats were silenced by Trystan Melancon in the opener. TSU recorded only two hits in the game, both singles by Marissa Padron and Chanler Powell. No TSU runner reached scoring position during the opener.
Â
Crumpton added a pair of RBIs in game two with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mariah Garcia and Arielle James hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning for the Cougars.
Â
Jasmin Fulmore took the loss in game two, giving up a pair of RBIs in the bottom of third. Those were the only two runs she gave up in four innings of work.
Â
Heaven Benavidez and Krystalani Yockman knocked base hits in game two for the Lady Tigers.
Â
The Lady Tigers return to action Wednesday when they visit Sam Houston State for one game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
