Softball sweeps Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home

HOUSTON– Texas Southern became the only conference team with a winning record following the completion of a three-game sweep over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. TSU won both sides of a Saturday doubleheader 6-5 and 8-0.

Down 5-1 entering the fourth inning of game one, Arkansas-Pine Bluff erased the deficit by taking advantage of a bases-loaded hits batsmen, a passed ball and an error to tie the game. Briana Simpson later scored on an error in the eighth to win it for the Tigers.

Domonique Tello and Chanler Powell each had two hits, and Haley Smith hit a home run for TSU. Kayla Reap was 2-for-4 for UAPB and Paige Garcia scored two runs. Jasmine Fulmore (5-2) picked up the win, striking out four and allowing three hits in 3.2 innings. Hailey Forbes (4-9) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in 4.2 innings.

In game two, Lauren Rodriguez pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Tigers to the win. Most of the damage came in the fifth inning, where TSU turned a 3-0 lead into an 8-0 lead. During the frame, Simpson (2-for-3) hit a ground-rule double to plate two runs.
