PINE BLUFF, Ark.
- The Lady Tigers softball team got a three-game series sweep over Arkansas-Pine Bluff as they now sit in sole possession of first place in the SWAC Western Division.
After opening the series with a 11-4 victory Texas Southern claimed two more wins over the UAPB, Sunday afternoon at the Torii Hunter Complex winning game two 8-7 and subsequently winning the series finale 7-0.
In game two the Lady Tigers scored three runs on four hits in the first inning, while the Golden Lions collected one run from Tonnay Hawkins. UAPB went on to take the lead, grabbing one run in the second and five runs in the third frame making the score, 7-3.
TSU battled back in the fifth inning as Jessica Miller and Brianna Simpson crossed home plate, using a single and a homerun to left field to bring in runs across the plate.
The Lady Tigers ended the game, adding three more runs in the seventh frame to win the contest 8-7.
In the last game of the series Texas Southern's Jasmin Fulmore pitched a no hitter as she provided five strikeouts while facing 22 batters. The Lady Tigers registered one run in the first inning, three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Miller led the day with five runs, while Chanler Powell earned a day-high three RBI.
"This was a big series win for our program," said TSU head coach Worley Barker. "We still have some things we want to work on going into our home series against Grambling State. Our offensive production has been good but we still feel like we've been leaving too many runner on base. Our pitching struggled at times but overall we played good enough to come out with three wins. Fulmore was great during the series as she gave us some quality innings and came within one out of pitching a perfect game."
Texas Southern will host Grambling State in the home finale this upcoming weekend at Memorial Park. Â
